Details of Innovation | Farmer adopts various techniques to induce papaya plants to bear more female flowers. In many cases, the plant bears more male flowers. For inducing such plants to bear female flowers, the farmer wraps a mekhala (an Assamese costume partly resembling the petticoat) or a cloth on the tree. Another method involves inserting some thin wooden pegs or nails into the tree trunk from the bottom. The third method involves trimming the exposed roots. Whereas in the fourth method, the top portion of the tree is sometimes chopped off, and the new branches that emerge would bear female flowers. |

PAS_1 | "Excessive vegetativegrowth adversely affects fruit setting while excessive fruit load reduces development of treecanopy. Skillful orchard management at this stage includes maintenance of optimum number of bearing branches as per the nutritional status and health of plant. Young trees tends tohave more vegetative growth, therefore, it has been observed that sometimes fruit productionis suppressed by excessive vegetative flushing particularly during autumn. Therefore, effectivemeasures like ringing, girdling, fostering of winter shoots, use of paclobutrazol, etc. can beapplied for proportional crop production." http://tmnehs.gov.in/writereaddata/Chap-8.pdf |
