This high-yielding variety has a maturity period of 105-115 days, exhibiting excellent drought tolerance and pest resistance. He then developed the Visakam variety, which could withstand water stagnation due to heavy rainfall. His experimentation finally paid off in 1994 when he developed a superior variety called Chinna Ponni. This short-duration variety has a maturity period of only 100 days. It can withstand drought and is disease-tolerant. The average production is about 7-8 tonnes/ha. It is best suited to red loamy soil but can grow in all kinds of soil. It requires very little fertilizer and can be grown throughout the year. Rice-recovery is quite high, i.e., 66-67%. Today, the Chinna Ponni variety is grown in nearly 200,000 acres in Tamil Nadu, which amounts to almost a third of the entire area under paddy cultivation. |
