Practice Name:

Inducing Fruiting in Male Papaya Trees

Details
Category Crop Pest & Disease Management
Crop Papaya
Crop Family Caricaceae
Scientific Name (Carica papaya)
Vernacular Name Papita
Scout HBN
Ingredients Nails made from bamboo splints.
Details of Innovation Many farmers of Mavli Tehsil do not remove male trees of Papaya. They drive two to five small nails made by bamboo splits in the basal portion at a height of about 50 cm of the stems of male trees. This is said to be good for induction of fruiting even in the male papayas. A similar practice was reported in HB 6(2):12 to make coconut trees bear fruits: Ed. Range Forest Officer, Aravalli Afforestation Project, Jhadol, Udaipur district, Rajasthan.

PAS_1 "Excessive vegetativegrowth adversely affects fruit setting while excessive fruit load reduces development of treecanopy. Skillful orchard management at this stage includes maintenance of optimum number of bearing branches as per the nutritional status and health of plant. Young trees tends to have more vegetative growth, therefore, it has been observed that sometimes fruit production is suppressed by excessive vegetative flushing, particularly during autumn. Therefore, effective measures like ringing, girdling, fostering of winter shoots, use of paclobutrazol, etc. can be applied for proportional crop production." http://tmnehs.gov.in/writereaddata/Chap-8.pdf
