Details of Innovation | Smut disease affects leaves and stems of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides)crop. This is identified by black spots that turn powdery later. To prevent it, innovator farmer Dhirubhai Kanjibhai from Surendranagar district of Gujarat, crushes the leaves of wind killer (Clerodendron phlomides) to get its extract, which he uses to coat the seeds of pearl millet before sowing. This prevents the smut disease and also ensures better germination of the plants. |
