Details of Innovation Due to heavy rains, there is a danger of the seedlings of tobacco (Nicotina tobaccum) putrefying, particularly if the roots are affected. To control the damage to tobacco, it will be useful if there is rain-damaged and decomposing pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) crop nearby. If rain-damaged and decomposing pearl millet crop is available, saving tobacco seedlings becomes that much easier. Simply clean the upper part of the pearl millet cob to remove dirt, if any, and save it. Strew the wasted portion along with pearl millet husk on the field where tobacco is coming up. Put pearl millet husk in the tobacco nursery also. Within two to three days, the tobacco seedlings rejuvenate and are in good condition and fit for planting. Use 1 kilogram of decomposed pearl millet for every 100 square feet area having tobacco seedlings. The farmers in Banaskantha villages have adopted this symbiotic practice to prevent loss of tobacco, which is a rich commercial crop. Scout Abdulla Pathan confirmed the practice in June 2004.
