| Details of Innovation | Before the onset of monsoon season in the areas of North Gujarat and Kutch, the innovator sows the seeds of wild watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) in the castor (Ricinus communis) field. At the end of monsoon season, this watermelon completely covers the field, which is helpful to conserve groundwater for the castor crop. The fruits of this crop serve as food for the animals. An experiment was conducted in the farm of Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat Agricultural University, under the supervision of Dr. Kalyansundram. Frowing wild watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) as an intercrop in the sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) crop will conserve the moisture. The reason may be that as the leaves of wild watermelon are broader and so the rays of sun cannot touch the ground and as a result, vapourization is ceased. |
