To grow better-sized onions (Allium cepa) and gralic (Allium sativum) and to get better value for this crop, farmers have always tried different methods. Badarsingh Jhala, farmer of Rantej village in Chansuma taluka in Mehsana district, uses "rekda" (sand of river-bed) mixed with castor oil for the better growth of bulbous roots.
To do so, he takes ten killogram of fine river sand and mixes it with castor oil . He puts the mixture in the field at an early stage of bulb development . This gives good results within 10 to12 days. This practice is prevalent in the area for the last quarter century.
Experts say that castor oil gives nourishment to plants and decreases the rate of evaporation, which benefits the soil. |
