Details of Innovation | Gobarbhai Ruparelia, of village Makhiala in Junagadh district of Gujarat, uses castor (Ricinus communis) seeds for pest-free storing of sesame(Sesamum inidicum) seeds. After storage, sesame seeds are prone to attack by larvae and other pests. Gobarbhai states that he stores sesame either for next sowing season or to get better market price. He therefore adds 2 kg castor seeds per 100 kg sesame seeds, which can store them for two to three years. Farmer Parvatiben Gajera also uses the same method and as do many other farmers of Makhiala. (Professor K D Solanki adds : Castor seeds contain poisonous element known as ricin which is believed to keep away the pests from infesting sesame). |
