Details of Innovation Farmer Chhaganbhai Zinabhai Rathod from Panchmahal district of Gujarat, informs that small insects such as "kukwa" and grasshopper infest the maize (Zea mays) crop. They cut and eat the leaves and buds of the plant. The menace is more common in monsoon, leading to crop loss. To control these pests, he extracts juice from 2 - 3 kg onion (Allium cepa) by crushing the bulbs. He adds this extract to 25 - 30 L water to make a solution, which he sprays on 0.25 ha of land. This traditional method is in use since many years, and he learnt it from his forefathers. (According to Dr V M Valand, Plant Pathologist, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand, onion juice is effective in controlling caterpillar at the weeding stage in maize. Strong smell of onion prevents the caterpillar from damaging theleaves). (According to Dr D M Korat, Agriculture Entomologist, Gujarat Agricultural University, Anand, repellent and antifeeding material in onion juice is responsible to drive the insects/pests away).
