Details of Innovation | Mansukhbhai Govindbhai Kapadiya from Rajkot district of Gujarat uses tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) powder, aloe (Aloe vera) leaves and buttermilk (preferably from milk of black cow) for increasing flowering and controlling aphid in green gram (Vigna radiata) crop. For this purpose, he puts together 200 gm tobacco powder, 2 fleshy leaves of aloe, 2 L buttermilk and 15 L water in a vessel and keeps it covered and undisturbed for 15 days. After this period, he filters this stock solution and uses 100 ml of it per 10 L water for spraying on green gram crop at interval of 8 - 10 days. This not only ensures better growth of the plant and flowers, but also controls 80% of the aphids. (According to Dr V M Valand, a mixture of soap solution with tobacco powder decoction, if sprayed on the crop controls aphids. Experiment of spraying buttermilk on cabbage, carried out at Anand gave good results in aphid control.) |

PAS_2 | "Gardeners have been using soap to control insects since the early 1800s. During the first half of the 19th century, whale oil soap and, more commonly, fish oil soaps were an important part of insect control. Recent tests indicate Ivory liquid dishwashing detergent, diluted with water to a 1 to 2% solution, provides the most consistent control and is easy to mix. There are also soaps available that are specifically formulated to control insects on plants. Thorough coverage of the plant and repeated applications may be necessary to bring insect populations under control. High rates of soaps and detergents may damage some varieties of plants. The most effective soaps have carbon chains of C-12 or C-18. Laurate (C-12) is the main component of most dishwashing liquids and various other products in common usage. The richest natural source of this is coconut oil." http://customers.hbci.com/~wenonah/hydro/pestcont.htm |
