Details of Innovation | Pulses and grains are prone to be affected by insects. These insects spread very fast and within a short while, 70-80 percent of the grain is damaged. To protect against this problem, Govindbhai Shobhanbhai of Dholumbar village of Vasda Taluka in Valsad district has, for several years now, been using the grass of oryza sativa, the powder of cicer arietinum and ash. For this purpose, first of all, a barn made of paddy and bamboo is constructed. Then, Cicer arietinum, paddy stalks and and ash are placed into it. Then one to one and a half kilograms of cicer arietinum dust is mixed, and placed along with the rice stalks. The barn is then filled with the grain or pulses and some heavy weight such as grinding mill stones are placed on the top . The barn is then closed to make it airtight. Insects are totally kept away by the dust of cicer arietinum. By using this method, it is possible to keep grains in good condition for upto two to three years. According to the information given by Dr. M.Korat, ash is a dehydrant that leaves the insect depleted of the required quantity of water. |
