| Details of Innovation | In 1985 to 1990, hybrid cotton was heavily infested with white fly because chemical pesticides failed to control the pest. As a result, farmers suffered heavy losses. So, cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) growing areas reduced in North Gujarat. To cure this problem, 3 kg tender leaves of lantana (Lantana camara) are boiled in 20 L of water for 3 to 4 hours. This mixture is boiled till 500 ml remains in the container and then it is strained. After cooling, 75 to 80 ml of this mixture is filled in 15 L capacity pump and sprayed on the affected cotton crop. According to Rajnikantbhai, if we increase the concentration of lantana from 80 ml, then the flowers of lantana will drop off and can cause side-effects. This treatment reduces the infestation in three to four days. The use of lantana extract does not kill the pest, it just stays away from feeding. This treatment is ecofriendly and harmless to the predators. |
