Ingredients leaves of bustard teak (Butea monosperma)
Details of Innovation Leaves of bustard teak (Butea monosperma) are exploited in the soil enrichment program. Here, leaves of bustard teak are collected from forest and allowed to dry. After harvesting wheat ( Triticum aestivum) or mustard (Brassica juncea) crop, the dried leaves are spread in the whole field. The leaves are then set to fire from one end of the farm. This helps in burning the residues of wheat or mustard crop. The ash produced by burning all these materials along with the leaves of bustard teak gets mixed with the soil helping in better yield. Any herbal waste is spread on the farm and if, it is set to fire, keeping against the wind direction, the heat of fire destroys the pathogenic fungus, bacteria, worms etc. But along with that, there is a threat of damage to soil, as very useful organisms lilke, azatobacter, rhizobium, earth worms will also be destroyed. Many nomadic farmers in Danta region of Banaskantha district of Gujarat are adopting this practice. As suggested by Dr. K D Solanki, use of bustard teak is prevalent for soil improvement. Dr. T.N. Barevdi, adds to the information that the ash replenishes potassium in the soil. But fire destroys organic nutrients of soil.
