Details of Innovation One of the common problems faced by coconut (Cocos nucifera) growers is that a number of small-sized fruits drop off the tree prematurely, causing even fully grown trees to provide reduced yield. Shridutt of Karnataka has adopted a simple, cheap and environment friendly method to combat this problem. First of all, Shridutt identifies the trees in which this problem exists. Then, he gets about 20-25 tender branches of the betel nut (Areca catechu) tree and cuts them into small pieces. He spreads these pieces near the root of the coconut (Cocos nucifera) tree. This method can be tried in the third week of August with very good results. According to Shridutt, before he adopted this method, his 30-35 year old trees gave a yield of only about thirty fruits. This has changed to 125 to 150 fruits per tree ever since he began to use the new technique.
