One should be careful before storing the grains in the granary. Due to the store grain pests, the keeping quality of grain deteriorates. The exiguous holes are observed on the grains making them unfit for food and sowing purpose.
Farmer of Mangalore district of Karnataka state uses the shell of coconut (Cocos nucifera) for the storage of vegetable seeds. Select one completely ripe and big coconut (Cocos nucifera) fruit, soak in water for two months and then dry it. Make a hole by piercing sharp knife in the eye of coconut (Cocos nucifera) shell. Dry this shell properly after cleaning and thereafter, fill the dry vegetable seeds in this coconut (Cocos nucifera) shell. Seal the hole of shell with quicklime to make it airtight. The vegetable seeds, thus are stored and can be safely preserved for three years without deterioration. The vegetable seeds filled in this shell were kept in the kitchen or in the warm place so that they did not catch moisture. This coconut shell can be reused to preserve new vegetable seeds after removing the preserved seeds. |
