Rajabhai Ghusabhai Harkhani is farmer from Mandawa village in Bhesan taluka of the Junagadh district in Gujarat. He has discovered a better species of lemon.
Harkhani thought of planting lemons in his orchard because animals and birds don't damage lemon trees. They bear fruits throughout the year and everyone requires lemons. But he had no money to buy the saplings. So he went to the market in Junagadh and bought 20 kilogrammes of spoilt lemons.
Harkhani removed the seeds from the lemon and coated them with ash to remove the excess moisture. Then he sowed the seeds and watered them regularly. One day, he noticed a paler and taller plant with larger leaves and no thorns. He picked up this plant and transplanted it in another orchard with dung manure.
After five years of care, the plants bore bigger than average fruits in bunch of seven to eight numbers. During the year, the plant yielded five kilogrammes of seedless lemons. Harkhani made 20 transplants from the same plant and grew them in his orchard. He now has 100 lemon trees. They bear fruits throughout the year. These lemons are easy to pick because there are no thorns on the branches. |
