| Details of Innovation | Shankarbhai Patel is a 45 year old farmer staying in Antarsuba village of Kapadwanj taluka in the Kheda district of Gujarat. He suggests the use of leaves of naffatio or, buttermilk, and water to control gabhamara worms. Gabhamara worms are half inch long, green in colour and have black dot on their head. It attacks paddy crop right from the begining and eats away the inside of the stems. Shankarbhai Patel pounds three to four kilogrammes of leaves of naffatio or Ipomoea fistulosa and extracts about 500 milliliters of juice. He adds 400 mililitres of stale buttermilk and 15 litres of water. He dilutes the solution with 15 litres of water and sprays it on the affected paddy crop. He ensures 70 per cent control on the worms. He recommends to repeat the procedure with a gap of 10 to 12 days, if required. He learnt this remedy from Ambalal Jivabhai from Rasbpur village of Thasara taluka. He has been using this method for five years now. Several farmers in the area use the same method to protect their paddy crop. |
