Details of Innovation	In vine crops like cucumber (Cucumis sativus), water channels are normally made two metres from the plants row. The innovation by Naranji Mali is that the seeds of creepers can be sown on the edges of such channels. Besides, as water is supplied to the channel, it is given a turn at one end. Thus, because of unevenness in the channels or slopes, the collection of water is ensured throughout the channels. This obviates the necessity of irrigating the whole field while ensuring all the vine plants are well irrigated. Thus water is saved to the extent of 80 per cent as compared to conventional methods. The channeling method uses only 20 per cent of water required to irrigate every inch of a field. Farmer Naranji says this is a self-developed practice. Previously, he used to cultivate cucumbers in the riverbed. But when farming became dependent on wells, he was compelled to save water. This inspired the idea of channels in him. In a way, he continues the practice at the river belt. For the last 10 years, he has been cultivating cucumber, bottle gourd, pumpkin and other creepers using this method.
