Details of Innovation Naranji Mali of Sihora district in Rajasthan is an extraordinarily simple farmer. His extraordinariness lies in finding simple solutions to farming problems. For example, when he was forced to shift from a riverine village to hinterland, he used the same riparian wisdom to grow cucumbers and pumpkin from the edges of the channels rather than two metres away as is conventionally done. Likewise, in the preservation of maize seed, he exhibits similar kind of wisdom. Instead of removing the grain from the ears of maize (Zea mays) stalks, he simply removes the ears during the harvest and dries them in the sun. After the sunlight treatment also, the seeds are not separated. Instead of whole ears, seeds and all, are filled up in gunny bags. These gunny bags are to be placed in a moisture-free area. Thus, maize seeds are prevented from spoilage and stored properly. As compared to this, seeds separated from ears and stored are vulnerable to pests. Naranji attributes the maize seed preservation practice to the wisdom of his ancestors.
