Jamsinghbhai Vajuba Gohil is known around Panchvad in the Bhavnagar area as a very intelligent tool-maker. Among other things, he has designed puncture-sealing devices for tractors. It is recognized that once he sees a device, he can copy it and also customize it for various uses. Pump-repairing, fan-fitting, and so on are like children play to him.
In the groundnut huller, Jamsinghbhai has brought about the necessary modifications by introducing two filters, one for the seed and another for the pod, and washing the seed.
Two filters
One cutter
In the vertical huller, groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) was opened in the cutter, and the nuts would fall into the filter where the shells were separated from the nuts and the latter collected. Now, Jamsingbhai Vajuba Gohil has modified the huller that could lift the machine by hydraulic pressure. By turning a handle wheel, one person can lift it. This device also washes groundnut with water and removes impurities with the help of two fans.
When newly introduced, the new huller became so popular that people in the Jalsi, Panchuada, Kakolia, Songadh, and other surrounding villages came to see the demonstration, realized its benefit and adopted it in their village panchayat offices. All the farmers in Medlvader used it for five days at a stretch.
By connecting it to a bullock cart, one person can easily transport it along with a water-drawing machine to the nearby villages. It is also easy to install at a new place. By placing a pipe at the bottom, one person can raise it, connect it to a bullock-cart or tractor with a belt, attach wheels and go where he wills. Jhamsinghbhai has also been very thoughtful in that he has put up a bulb that runs on a dynamo in the device for day and night working.
The people from the hills came down from Palitana and took the new huller to their respective villages. They have given no respite to the huller ever since and worked on cleaning their entire groundnut crop.
The new huller consists of the following parts:
8-HP water-drawing machine
Two wheels of Jeep
a handle to pull by rope
Two large pulleys
a belt to rotate the pulley
cutter 1
Two filters, one small and the other big
One dynamo
The dynamo has been designed as a permanent feature in the new huller to make it mobile and enable farmers to pour their harvest into the machine for processing. The price of the huller is Rs. 30,000. |
