Details of Innovation | If the papaya (Carica papaya) crop does not fructify, it means a heavy loss for the farmer. The innovator farmer, Maganbhai Sheladiya, was faced with the problem of his papaya crop not flowering or bearing fruit, hit upon a good idea. He put a coconut shell and pressed it hard on the crown of the papaya tree. To his pleasant surprise, a strange thing happened. Soon tender leaves, followed by flowers, started growing from the groove of the trunk. Maganbhai explains that by pressing down coconut shells in the groove of the papaya trunk, the plant's vertical growth is retarded. As the plant develops laterally, there is no need for further leafing. Flowers followed by fruit are the result. This is exactly what a grower aspires for. |
