| Details of Innovation | Vinubhai Hirjibhai from Bhavnagar district of Gujarat informs that insect pests like aphid and whitefly usually attack cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) crop three months after sowing, between October - November months. The infestation makes the leaves dry and reddish, and reduces the size of the cotton bolls. If the insects are not controlled, crop yield decreases. Immediately after sowing is done, Vinubhai buries a closed vessel or pot filled with pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) flour in a garbage heap for three months. When insect infestation occurs in cotton, he digs out the buried vessel and sprinkles the pearl millet flour on the cotton crop. This destroys the insects. |
