Details of Innovation Farmer Ambashankar Naribhai from Bhavnagar district of Gujarat has observed that green caterpillars infest chili (Capsicum annuum) crop in monsoon and winter. These pests make cocoons on the leaves of chili plants, causing leaf-curling, thus reducing the yield. Ambashankar cultivates a line of castor (Ricinus communis) plants per 0.25 ha of chili crop along the border to prevent this. Both chili and castor are sown simultaneously. Caterpillars settle on castor plants instead of chili plants, and as castor leaves are poisonous, they die when they eat the leaves. Thus, caterpillar infestation in chili is controlled.
