When the growth of the brinjal (Solanum melongena) and chili (Capsicum annuum) crops is not promising enough, the ripe fruit of desert date (Balanites roxburghii) fructifies the hopes of the farmer. Nagjibhai Bachubhai Rathore collects the desert dates from the trees and seperates their rind. The rind is then separated, dried and powdered. Then this powder is mixed with 10 litres of water. This mixture is sprayed by pump in two-fifths of an hectare, where brinjal and chili are planted. The rind of the fruits are crushed, mixed with water and sprinkled. Within three days, flowers bloom on the brinjal and chili plants.
Most of the farmers growing vegetables are using this practice in the Banot area in Bhavnagar district for the last 10 years.
Desert date trees grow to a height of 15 to 20 feet. It has big thorns like the bili tree. Its fruits are oblong like wood apple. This tree grows around hedges. |
