Ingredients Stone pillars, eucalyptus pole, coconut and pongamia leaves, branches of giant milkweed (Calotropis gigantea), local grass of Karnataka and sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) leaves.
Details of Innovation Farmer use a eucalyptus pole, various types of local grass and leaves of coconut, pongamia, sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) and giant milkweed (Calotropis gigantea) to store potato tubers for two to three months. The farmers select and construct a highly elevated area of 25 x 4 square feet in the field. They harden the soil and fix two stone pillars at a distance of four feet. Thus they are able to erect around 12 stone pillars. A roof is thatched over these stone pillars using eucalyptus pole, coconut and pongamia leaves to provide shade. On the floor, different types of local grass and sugarcane leaves are spread in a layer. The harvested potato tubers are stored in a layer over this bed of leaves. On top of this layer another layer of leaves, about four inch thick is spread. Once in every two to three weeks the stored potatoes are checked to see if they are infested by pests or not. Using this method, the farmers are able to store the potatoes for a period of at least two to three months. The farmers also spread the leaves and branches of giant milkweed to prevent the attack of rats and rodents. This method is found to be so effective that according to the farmers even during the hot mid-afternoon times, the stored potatoes remain cool in between the layers of leaves.
