This high-yielding variety has a maturity period of 105-115 days exhibiting excellent drought tolerance and pest-resistance. He then developed the Visakam variety, which could withstand water stagnation due to heavy rainfall. His experimentation finally paid off in 1994 when he developed a superior variety, which he called Chinna Ponni. This short-duration variety has a maturity period of only 100 days. It can withsatnd drought and is disease-tolerant. The average production is about 7-8 tonnes/ha. It is best suited to red loamy soil but can grow in all kinds of soil. It requires very little fertilizer and can be grown throughout the year. Rice-recovery is quite high ie. 66-67%. Today the Chinna Ponni variety is grown in nearly 200,000 acres in Tamil Nadu, which amounts to almost a third of the entire area in the state that is under paddy cultivation. |
