Details of Innovation Farmer Lakhabhai Dahyabhai of Gujarat has been incensed that insect pests attacking cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) crop stunt the growth of plants and ruin the crop. In neem, he has found a cheaper, effective pesticide. But Lakhabhai is not one to wait for the pest attack to do firefighting in order to save the crop. He believes that preventive action is the best form of protection for the crop. He spreads the manure of neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves and oil-cake of neem seeds in furrows while ploughing the field. He then sows the cotton seeds. This method does not allow the pests to invade the crop and ensures increase in cotton yield.
