| Details of Innovation | Shelf life of onion (Allium cepa) is important factor after harvest of the crop. To increase the shelf life and productivity of onion crop, an empty galvanized barrel (having 200 lit capacity, and generally used for oil transport and storage) is rolled on the crop before 15 to 20 days of the crop harvest. The practice breaks the stem portion of the onion which stops the utilization of resource for growth of leaf and flower. The nutrients and water absorbed by the roots are all utilized by the bulb portion to increase its size. In addition to this, drying of outer rind of the bulb also slows down, resulting in longer shelf life. This helps to increase the flavour too. |
