| Details of Innovation | Bhogilal recalls how in 1990 he was called by two upper caste farmers in Bhilod village, Bharuch district. Their crop was infested with sungo (Blister Beetle). It is a pest which attacks the bajra crop during the flowering stage to feed on pollen grains. The infestation affects the grain setting and therefore also the productivity of the crop. He vividly remembers living in the neighbouring village of Vagalkhore. Responding to the pest-plagued farmers, he took a full of bag of leaves with him to Bhilod. He also asked for 10 labourers. He gave each labourer leaves in their palms and asked them to crush 2-3 blister beetles between the leaves. The peculiar smell emanating from the ruptured mixture repelled the insects. The labourers stood in a row at the end of the field and moved slowly in the direction of the wind to the other end crushing more beetles from time to time as they walked through the crops. They did exactly as they were told and the farmers of Bhilod were amazed to see the beetles leaving their field almost immediately. A colleague of his, Chunilal Master from Torapa village, Rajpipla taluka, told him about a traditional practice used in controlling blister beetle infestations. The practice was in use in his village for hundreds of years. It consisted of crushing the leaves of sitafal (custard apple) and moong (a pulses) plants along with a few beetles, to repel the pest. |
