Details of Innovation A.I Nadakattin took up tamarind farming in 1985 and has since then planted and raised over 1800 tamarind trees on an area of 16 acres. He has grown the trees on scientific lines using local resources, expertise and practices. Most of the trees have begun to yield fruits. This work of his has become a model for other farmers in the area. A group of American farmers visited his farm and expressed deep satisfaction. They were amazed to see a barren land turn into a rich, natural habitat. Local leaders, researchers, development functionaries, government officers and farmers pay visits to the farm regularly and appreciate the efforts he has put in. The gains of this activity are quite apparent: surface water level has risen, underground water table has improved, the atmosphere has cooled, soil fertility has improved and a wealth of birds now arrive. To top it all, it has contributed immensely to the economic well-being of the people employed on the farm.
