| Details of Innovation | In 1985, Kaliben decided toto put 20 guntha (0.2 ha) land on garlic(allium vineale). She got the field ploughed and prepared and organised the seed cloves. She then hired 10 labourers to sow the cloves in the well-manured and watered field. She herself had no idea how garlic was sown. In her maiden home, she had never come across garlic beiing cultivated. The field had been divided into 20 rows. She decided that she herself would sow the cloves in one of the rows. After 5 days, sprouts began to appear in the 19 rows that had been worked on by the experienced labourers; there was no sign of sprouts from the row she had worked on. It was then she discovered that she had placed the cloves in the seed holes the wrong side up. The cloves sown by Kaliben began sprouting after 10 days. As it turned out, the shoots from this row were healthier and bigger; also bulbs havested from this row were larger, and the yield higher. Kalibens method of sowing garlic was given a fair trial by as many as 8 farmers in Dungri. After intense evaluation, they opine that the method worked well provided the land had the facility of irrigation. Also, sowing must be performed in the right season. They discovered it helps to apply ash to the soil and to go in for interculturing with other crops along with garlic. Kaliben is quite satisfied with doing hard labour and is gratefulfor her good health. Whenever she is complimented for the technique, she admits that he had sought for nothing and was only doing what she liked best: hard work. |
