Details of Innovation There is a local saying in Surendranagar that drought teaches a lot. During 1986-88 also, when there was drought in this region, it was a time for learning. It was during the drought that the farmers learnt how to save their cattle. At that time, the people were able to save therir cattle with milk hedge (Euphorbia neriifolia) plant found in desert areas. They used the method of "dandalis" to get cattlefeed out of the plant. The method the people used to prepare cattlefeed is as follows: 1 First cut milk hedge and bring it home. 2 Cut the milk hedge stem into small pieces and split it vertically and press it in the middle. 3 Thereafter add molasses and salt and press and tie the pieces into bundles. Then feed these to cattle. 4 The cattle feed and relish the milk hedge pieces that are nutritious also. Milk hedge is a herb that cannot be eaten raw. Hence, the elaborate preparation has to be made. The simple reason for the effort is milk hedge is easliy available. Besides, it grows well in times of drought, budding and blossoming.
