Dulabhai Punjabhai Patel from Gadha village of Modasa Taluka of Sabarkantha district has developed a new variety of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan). According to him, he sowed B.D.N. (2) variety of pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in the year of1996. Later he noticed that two plants were different from others in the field with the following parameters.
(1) These plants had less secondary branches and their height was more than that of B.D.N. (2) variety.
(2) Colour of flowers were red, bunch was thicker and they were on the top of plant.
(3) Bunch of pods were bigger and the pod cover was thicker. Each pods have five to six seeds.
(4) This variety was more immune to diseases.
(5) Colour of seeds were light pink and the size was bigger as compared to that of B.D.N. (2) variety.
Above mentioned features of those two plants were promising so, he harvested them separately. He sowed these seeds in a separate furrow in the year 1997. Rain was scarce in that year and he could not even arrange for irrigation, still he got 6 kg yield. He sowed this 6 kg pigeon pea Cajanus cajan in round one acre of land in the year 1998. This crop gave the yield of 1300 kg.
Gramsevak Rajanibhai, gave these seeds to Kantibhai Patel of Muvadi village near Sathamba of Sabarkantha district. He has deduced this from two year of his experience, that this variety is proven best for irrigated as well as for unirrigated. The plants of pigeon pea Cajanus cajan stand erect against each other, when they bear the pods and the distance between two furrows is three and a half to four feet. The plants tend to lean due to the weight of pods just as it happens in the case of mustard crop. Due to this, the pods were spoiled during irrigation. In the year 1999, Dosubhai Afzalbhai Gujarati of Modasa (Address: Jamal Var, ganehiweda) sowed this species of pigeon pea Cajanus cajan in 0.96 hac. As told by the farmer, the flowering was less in this variety and the plants attains more height. Due to this, in the beginning some farmers said that the plants were barren and decided to remove them. But he kept patience for some more time and to his great surprise, there was a very heavy flowering at once and the flowers were pink and red in colour. The pods were big and long and looked like the pods of "Paapadi" or beans. Hence he started the selling unripe pods. There is good demand from the market due to its sweet taste. Thus, he sold ten thousand rupees worth of pods. Over and above that, he produced 1200 kg of pigeon pea Cajanus cajan. He could sow wheat crop after the harvest of pigeon pea Cajanus cajan crop. The pods of this variety are bigger in size as compared to that of B.D.N. (2) variety. So it sales at lower rate. |
