Details of Innovation The foliage of legume crops is often denuded by various caterpillars. The leaves of young chickpea plants are eaten by caterpillars of Heliothis armigera, which later bore into pods and cause wholesale damage to the crop. Dusting with BHC or spraying with DDT or Endrin may be effective but the chemical route leaves harmful residues in the produce. They themselves being principal consumers of their produce, farmers of Dahod in Gujarat prefer organic methods to control the menace rather than chemicals. Damor has informed the NGO Sadguru Seva Trust that the combination of cow urine and the weed swamp morning-glory (Ipomoea aquatica) works wonders in organically controlling the caterpillars. She herself uses this practice every year in her farm. The NGO helps farmers in the region to exploit the ecologically friendly farm practice. Extract the juice of the weed and mix 500 millilitres of it to two litres of cow urine in a closed vessel. Stir well and allow to stand for three days. Filter the fermented solution and dilute in ten litres of water. Two sprays of this concoction with a weeks gap will kill most of the heliothis in chick pea (Cicer arietinum) crop. This treatment can be used equally effectively to protect pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) crop also.
