Details of Innovation Despite profuse flowering from healthy vines, the actual production of useful fruits in different types of gourds like sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica) spine gourd (Momordia diocia) and bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) is sometimes significantly low. The reason is the premature wilting and dropping off of the flowers and young fruits. Padhiyar states he has been achieving 100 per cent solution to this problem with the use of Indian bdellium (Commiphora mukul) vapour. He takes the dried resin of Indian guggul about 40 grams and pounds it well and compacts in a metal tube. The pellet is lighted and taken around the vines so that the smoke reaches all the buds and flowers. Consistently good results are reported from the practice for the last 20 years.
