Details of Innovation Striga (Striga gesnerioides) is a parasitic weed. It suppresses the development of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) crop. Striga survives round the year. It reduces 60% production of sorghum. Striga affects sugarcane crop also. Its appearance is greenish, flowers are white, leaves are lengthy and green in colour. Striga can be seen in the fields even after crop activity is over. At the time of sowing of sorghum, dill seed (Anethum graveolens) is mixed with the seeds of sorghum. Both the seeds are sown in the same row. Dill seed sprouts faster than striga, thereby controlling and leaving little space for the striga weed. The weed is thus elbowed out. Effects of dill seed can be seen after its sprouting. No adverse effects are reported on the crop. Cattle consume striga weed. This is a traditional method, but it is rarely practised in recent times.
