Ingredients Tamarind seeds (Tamarindus indica).
Details of Innovation The population of crabs increases manifold in rice paddy (Oryza sativa) fields at the start of monsoon, the sowing season. These crabs mate in burrows they dig at the bunds and multiply. They cause losses to the farmer in two ways. They chew the stems of the paddy plants and cause considerable loss of yield. Also, their burrows at the bunds channeling water into and out of the field let a lot of water escape from the field. This leaves the field dry, which is very detrimental to paddy. Hence, control of crab population is very essential. Kamalaben of Valsad region in Southern Gujarat has tried several methods to control crab population. She has found out that placing a couple of tamarind (Tamarindus indica) seeds near the openings of burrows makes the crabs pack up and leave the holes, only to be caught and devoured by predatory birds.
