Details of Innovation The cotton crop attracts several types of heliothis pests. The most serious pests of cotton are the pink bollworm (Platyedra gossypiella) and the spotted bollworm (Earias spp.). The bolls are also liable to attack by the red cotton bug (Dysdercus cingulatus) and the dusky cotton bug (Oxycarenus laetus). While spraying or dusting with BHC or DDT helps to keep down many of these pests, it adversely affects the environment. An environmentally friendly solution for the control of the boll destroyers has found favour with enlightened cotton farmers of Gujarat. It involves use of locally available flora. Take two kilograms of glorybower (Clerodendrum phlomidis syn. C. multiflorum) plants, add two litres of water to the mass and bring to boil. When still hot, add one kilogram of bracteated birthwort (Aristolochia braceolata syn. A. bracteata) leaves and allow this solution to stand for 24 hours. Then, add 500 grams of neem (Azadirchta indica) oil and reheat. Stir well while heating. Then, add 200 grams of cheap detergent powder commonly used for washing clothes. When the solution has cooled down, filter it and dilute with water. Using this traditional method controls bollworms as effectively as chemical pesticides while not degrading the environment..
