| Details of Innovation | Surendranagar district of Gujarat is a parched region lying very near to the Little Rann (desert) of Kachchh. This water scarce area receives little rain and most of the soil is saline due to the nearby desert. Farmers of this area grow cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) as it needs less water. Prior to sowing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) crop, Girdharbhai Patel of Surendranagar district of Gujarat treats the cotton seeds by rolling these in wet and sticky black mud for about 5 - 10 hr. The idea behind this, according to the farmer, is that even if the onset of the rains is delayed or if the rainfall is below normal, the seed would sprout by itself by retaining the moisture due to the wet and sticky mud. This traditional method has been adopted by about 95% of the farmers of his village and nearby area. |
