Genarally, paddy crop is transplanted for getting its higher yields. For this they need to have healthy seedlings obtained by proper care.
Area selected for growing seedlings is then administered with fertilizer made of dry leaves of acrid toothbrush tree (Salvadora persica). For this purpose, farmers accumulate bales of such leaves before monsoon. About 3 bales of fertilizer is used in field of 5 kg paddy seedling capacity. Seeds of paddy are cultivated in this area to get healthy seedlings. These seedlings are found to be free from disease and insect pest attack.
Toothbrush tree is a big tree and bears small fruits, so called "Piluda" in Gujarati, The fruits are eatable. There are two types of toothbrush trees. One is acrid in taste, while the other is sweet in taste. In this practice, leaves of acrid toothbrush tree are used. Due to its acrid characteristics, it prevents insects to infest paddy seeds.
The practice is traditional and very popular among the farmers since last 10 years. |
