Details of Innovation One should be careful before storing the grains in the granary. Due to the store grain pests, the keeping quality of grain deteriorates. The exiguous holes are observed on the grains making them unfit for consumption. Noorbhai states that people have been storing grains in soil about 50 years ago.To store grains in soil, a pit is of about 8 to 10 ft. deep is dug. Then one half ft. straw of sorghum ( Sorghum vulgare) or pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) is filled in the lower surface of pit. Then grains are layered upto one ft. and one half ft. straws are layered and again one ft. grains are layered till the process is completed. In this way, seven layers of straw are spread while six layers of grains are spread. Thereafter, the pit is covered with the soil tightly. The grains, which are stored are taken out of pit in the monsoon season to use. Grains can be effectively stored for one year with the help of this method. Previously, the people were using this method for grain storage.
