Details of Innovation The Origin Ganeshbhai once saw a motor-operated sprayer at a construction site and an idea struck him: he could use the same technology to spray his fields with pesticides. He connected a pump to the only motor he had of his own- an Enfield motorcycle. He placed a pesticide-filled tank at a level higher than that of the pump so allowing the mixture to come into the pump. He then attached a pump outlet with five openings to a pipe and his cotton field sprayer was ready. This innovation uses a pump that is driven by a motorcycle engine. The pesticide-filled tank is placed at a level higher than that of the pump, which allows the mixture to enter into it. The pump outlet is attached to the pipe. One opening is attached to the pump itself; two openings are connected to the adjustable spraying valves. One opening is left open to allow air to enter; the air enters from the inlet once the water starts being pumped (Bernoullis principle); this serves the purpose of balancing the air pressure. The last opening goes back into the tank; this has a valve that regulates the spraying pressure. The returning water also serves the function of stirring the mixture in the tank. This device can be attached to any motorcycle that has a 5hp. diesel engine. The fields are sprayed about eight times a month during the three-month long cotton season. 1acre (1.6 bighas) of farm requires 300 lt. of the mixture to be sprayed by a motorcycle.
