| Details of Innovation | Mr. Sebastian Joseph is a marginal farmer and has studied only upto fourth standard. His financial condition is poor. His first attempt at farming was in the cultivation of banana, in which he failed miserably. But his determination and will power saw him through. With the help of his son Rejimon, he developed a new variety of cardamom which heralded a new period in cardamom cultivation. Spices are high-value commercial crops and very important to the economy. The innovator selected good berries and cross-pollinated them. He then selected 4 plants and kept bee-hives in the middle of them. He covered the plants using mosquito nets. Then he marked the flowers which yielded berries. He then selected these berries and bigger berries. The selected 4 clones and had 148 berries that were double the size of the Mysore variety. The selected variety multiplied by the Clonal Propagation Method. The variety developed had 24-28 seeds in one capsule as against the usual 10-12. The panicles in this variety creep upward and bear 120-160 capsules when compared to 30-35 in the ordinary variety. The plant grows to a height of 8 to 12m. The yield varies from 800-1000 Kg/ha as against 250-300Kg/ha. These berries are 3 times larger than the ordinary variety. |
