| Details of Innovation | Coconut farms in Watrap face acute shortage of labour especailly for plucking coconuts. This prompted Mr. Karuppih to invent the Coconut Harvestor for harvesting matured nuts of the coconut tree. It can harvest coconut from a height of 50 ft. and the machine can be operated with the help of two persons; one person for driving the tractor and the other for harvesting nuts. After looking at the model of a JCB excavator, he developed the coconut harvester. He has attached a hydraulic jack and fitted ten levers by using a tractor. This hydraulic jack can be adjusted, so as to carry a person to the top of the hose for plucking coconuts. He uses light-weight iron plates in this machine. Ten acres of coconut plantation can be harvested in a day using this machine. Besides, the Coconut harvester can work in all seasons. He has invested about ten lakh rupees in designing the first protype of the coconut harvestor. |
