Details of Innovation	Muljibhai has developed a method for identifying stronger specimens from among a crop of a local variety of bajra called Nisarg-1. His experiments in this direction are now in their third year. He is comparing the yield and other qualities of the seeds of Nisarg-1 with those of hybrid varieties of bajra. This year he has been comparing his Nisarg-1 seeds with the G.G.20 variety of bajra. He has also begun a similar exercise with a local variety of groundnut. He is also trying to determine the optimum distance between two fruit trees in a row and the optimum distance between two rows of trees for maximum yield. He has developed techniques for taking advantage of those parts of the trees that receive more sunshine. The fruits on these branches ripen faster and can be harvested earlier. Muljibhai told me that he discovered this technique accidentally when a branch of a guava tree broke during a storm. New shoots sprouted in place of the broken branch after some time at a different angle. The branch in this position received more sunshine than before and the fruits on it developed faster than those on the rest of the tree. So he tied weights to a branch of a guava tree to bend it slightly so that the sunshine incident on different parts of the tree changed. He noticed that the yield obtained from the branch that had been exposed to sunlight went up by almost 20 per cent.
