The low-cost hand pump has the capacity to lift water to a height of 200 ft. The pump consists of an inverted T-shaped pipe of a diameter of one inch. One end is connected to a hose which is dipped into the source of water and the other end is attached to a hose for delivering water. The pump can draw water from a depth of 5-7 metres and can pump to a vertical height of 200m. When the lever of the piston rises, water rises to the suction hose and enters the piston due to suction pressure, and when the lever falls, water flows through the delivery hose. Two non-return valves prevent the backward flow of water. As the pump works on the principle of suction pressure, no electricity is needed and it can be operated manually.
The innovators have installed 30 such pumps in nearby villages; each of these pumps cost Rs. 200. |
