Developing "Chinna Po nni" variety
In 1994 he evolved a third variety called Chinna Ponni. This is a short duration variety, which matures in 100 days. It with stand drought and is tolerant to disease. It is a fine variety. This variety has a much synchronised ear emergence and maturity of grains. Non shattering ear head. Rice recovery percent is high (66-67 per cent). It yields up to 50 bags of paddy (1 bag weighs 68 kg). This is popular in Vapidity area where red loam soil is predominant. By seeing these good performance, farmers from Cudalore, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu started enquiring about this variety and there was a demand for getting the seeds of chinnaponni. Mr. S.S. Nagarajan is an expert plant breeder in Tamil Nadu. He once toured some paddy tracts in Chengalpattu region.
He found that most of the farmers lost their crops due to lack of water in the tank in the fag end of the cropping season. However few farmers who had sown Chinna ponni" alone escaped from the situation due to its early harvest. By seeing the performance of "Chinna ponni" Mr. Nagarajan, enquired the source of supply of seeds and based on that he contacted Mr. Rajendran. Then he has grown "Chinna Ponni" in his "J Farm" and conducted adoptive research and confirmed its superiority. Then the natural spread of the variety throughout the paddy growing area of Tamil Nadu made this variety much popular. Many farmers were demanding pure seeds of "Chinna Ponni" and sending many letters to Mr. Rajendran. Rajendran has started seed selling business in his wife's name. Those farmers who have taken to "China Ponni" cultivation are happy because they get a ready market for their produce. For example the farmers in Metuneerathan village near Madurai grow only "Chinna ponni" variety because of its superior performance in the red soil tract which is known for boosting paddy yield (4 bags extra yield per acre in red soil tract).
The variety is now on natural spread in Tamilnadu. During 1998 on the occasion of Pongal festival (Harvesting festival on the day of 14th Jan.) the village farmers of Vadipatti felicitated him. The performance of the variety "Chinna ponni" is excellent in the first crop by raising nursery in the month of late May to early June. The nursery period should not exceed 18-20 days.
