| Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs |
Paralysis of legs, wings and neck.
Loss of weight.
Grey iris or irregular pupil.
Vision impairment.
Skin around feather follicles raised and roughened. |
| Disease Description |
It is a highly contagious viral disease caused by a herpes virus called Alphaherpesvirinae. Marek's disease occurs in chickens 3–4 weeks of age or older but is most common between 12 and 30 weeks of age. It can also infect quail and, rarely, turkeys. Female birds are infected more often than males. |
| Disease Control |
The best things small flock keepers can do to prevent Marek's from infecting their chickens are:
Buy stock from hatcheries or breeders who vaccinate their birds. If you breed your own, vaccinate day-old chicks.
Keep the coop clean and well-ventilated. ...
Separate a sick hen from the flock. |
| Disease Prevention |
So how can you prevent Marek's Disease in your flock? Vaccination of day old baby chicks is the most dependable way to prevent the clinical disease. Birds must get the vaccine before they are exposed to the virus. Then the birds need about 4-7 days for the vaccine to do its work. |

| Procedure of Use |
Murex is a viral disease afflicting poultry birds. Murex afflicts poultry birds in an epidemic form, causing en masse death of the birds. To control murex disease in poultry, 100 gram bark of golden shower tree (Cassia fistula) is pounded to powder. The powder is soaked in water and placed in a drinking vessel. All the birds are made to drink from this solution. This saves the birds from death and the disease is controlled.
The practice is now out of use due to non-availability of golden shower tree material.
This is a traditional method learnt from forefathers. |
| Etiology Causative Agent |
Marek's disease herpesvirus (MDV) was identified as the causative agent of this disease. MDV is a lymphotrophic herpesvirus that induces T-cell lymphomas in the chicken (its natural host) after an early cytolytic infection. Stress is the most important environmental factor that plays a major role in MD. |
| Global Context |
Spread world wide |
| Lesson Implication |
Ocular lymphomatosis causes lymphocyte infiltration of the iris (making the iris turn grey), unequal size of the pupils, and blindness. Cutaneous Marek's disease causes round, firm lesions at the feather follicles. Atherosclerosis is induced in experimentally infected chickens. |
