| Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs |
Symptoms of hypersalivation include drooling, spitting, and excessive swallowing. Other related symptoms include: chapped lips. softening and damage to the skin around the mouth |
| Disease Description |
Saliva, a thick, colourless, opalescent fluid that is constantly present in the mouth of humans and other vertebrates. It is composed of water, mucus, proteins, mineral salts, and amylase. As saliva circulates in the mouth cavity it picks up food debris, bacterial cells, and white blood cells. |
| Disease Control |
Saliva is produced and secreted by the salivary glands of the body. These glands are under the control of the autonomic nervous system, comprised of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibres. |

| Procedure of Use |
When continuous saliva secretion is observed from the mouth of an animal, then use equal amounts of leaves and bark of "ladiya tree" (Bergia suffruticosa) i.e. 500 gram each, to cure it. The bark and leaves are pounded thoroughly. Prepare an extract from the mixture, add water and drench it to the affected animal with the help of drenching pipe (nal) twice a day for three days. This medication will completely cure the animal of excess salivation problem.
There is no side-effect to this medicine. |
| Etiology Causative Agent |
Etiology of sialorrhea. Increased secretion of saliva frequently develops due to inflammation, such as teething, dental caries, and oral cavity infections. Pregnancy is another significant cause of hypersecretion, usually related to hyperemesis gravidarum. |
| Global Context |

| Lesson Implication |
Excessive salivation, mouth lesions and fever are signs of infectious disease and you should get your veterinary officer to look at the animal immediately. Rinderpest and foot and mouth disease (see Unit 25) cause excess salivation and mouth lesions. Other diseases also cause these signs. |
