| Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs |
At the injection site, the skin may be discolored and edema may occur. Subacute toxicosis, such as that occurring after oral ingestion, can be grouped into four phases. During the first phase, signs develop up to 6 hours after exposure2 and include bloody vomiting and diarrhea caused by GI hemorrhage. |
| Disease Description |
|
| Disease Control |
If an animal has ingested >20 mg/kg of elemental iron, GI decontamination through induced vomiting with 3% hydrogen peroxide or apomorphine should be considered up to 1 to 2 hours after ingestion, unless the animal is already vomiting. Activated charcoal is not indicated because it does not bind well to iron. |

| Procedure of Use |
If an animal accidentally swallows iron pieces like nails or wire with fodder, this would irritate or create problems in its digestive system. Naranbhai Pargi of Dahod district, Gujarat, cures such an animal in the folloing way:
He pounds 500 gram internal bark of rohida tree (Tecomella undulata) and soaks it in 500 gram water. After some time, he filters the solution and administers it to the animal in one dose. He continues the same treatment for three to four days. This enables the animal to expel the ingested iron item with dung. |
